View Document Thumbnail in Modern Document Library View in SharePoint Online

Super quick post for you guys today. It’s fun when you stumble upon functionality that you didn’t previously know about. Maybe you knew this trick or maybe you didn’t?

It turns out that if you want to add a thumbnail view of your file to a Modern SharePoint Document Library view all you have to do is create a calculated column called “Thumbnail” and add that column to your list view.

I stumbled upon this because I was actually going to use the Column Formatter ( https://pnp.github.io/sp-dev-list-formatting/ ) to add a thumbnail to my view and I created a calculated field as a placeholder for the column formatter. Then when I went back to the list view after creating the field I was pleasantly surprised! Cool stuff… okay… that’s all… get back to work…

  1. Hi Mark,

Hillbilly Cascade is wonderful, thank you for your effort.

To give back, I have just finished updating the code to work with a many-to-many list situation. For example, a list of ProductCategories, where only the ProductID and CategoryID are stored, and both lookup to their respective Parent tables. Each product can be associated to many categories, and each category can be associated to many products.

If you’re interested in having the code, please let me know where to send. I’ll add my contact details in the separate text boxes below.
